THE GLASS ARTIST
CATHINKA MÆHLUM

Glass is more than a material in Cathinka Mæhlum’s hands—it is a language of light, movement, and transformation. Inspired by Lofoten’s ever-changing sky, she shapes molten glass into unique creations that capture the fleeting beauty of the Arctic.

Her artistry is a dance between fire and form, where ancient glassblowing traditions meet modern expression. With each piece, she bridges past and present, honoring time-honored techniques while forging her own path. From delicate sculptures to intricate details, her work reflects the rhythm of Lofoten—the glow of the midnight sun, the flicker of the Northern Lights, the shifting hues of sea and sky.

At Lofoten Glass, you are invited to witness this process up close — to see glass come alive in the flames, shaped by skill, passion, and the Arctic light itself.

From a Flicker of Fire to a World of Glass

The journey that led to Lofoten Glass didn’t begin among the wild landscapes of the Arctic. It started in a quiet laboratory in Trondheim, where a young Cathinka Mæhlum watched her father work with glass—delicate ampoules, precision, and fire. The moment she first sealed a glass vessel with her own hands, something clicked. The flickering flame awakened a fascination that would shape her life.

From that first spark, her passion grew. She sought out the masters of the craft, learning the intricate balance between heat and movement, fragility and strength. Glass is unforgiving, yet full of possibilities—much like the shifting light of Lofoten. Every lesson, every molten shape pulled from the furnace, brought her closer to her own artistic voice.
