Every year, the Northeast Arctic cod, also known as skrei, migrates from the Barents Sea to the Norwegian coast to spawn. This remarkable natural cycle gave rise to the Lofoten Fishery, one of the world’s largest seasonal fisheries and a cornerstone of Norwegian culture, economy and society for more than a thousand years.
Discover the story at the heart of Lofoten through an innovative main exhibition that brings history to life with sound, light and atmosphere. Explore the world of skrei, follow the story through the centuries, and meet both the people who went out to sea and those who remained ashore. Learn how the Lofoten Fishery operates today and how we can continue to live from and alongside the sea in the future.
Otolitten was designed by LPO Architects. The building is inspired by the fish’s otolith, or ear stone, which records the skrei’s growth and migration patterns much like the rings of a tree.
