The new national Hurtigruten Museum opened in the autumn of 2021 and is a great experience both in terms of content and architecture. When the Hurtigruten started at the end of the 19th century, it was a national transport revolution – Norway was for the first time connected from north to south throughout the year.
The main attraction is the completely restored MS Finnmarken from 1956 which is on land and inside its iconic building. Modern theme stations under the keel of the boat provide insight into the importance of the Hurtigruten for the coastal country of Norway. On board, visitors can make discoveries on the bridge, ladies’ lounge, on the decks and more. A guide can take interested people into the engine room.
The museum’s jewel is the exclusive salons from the steamship DS Finmarken from 1912, where you are taken into an atmosphere with a “touch of the Titanic”. Do not forget a cup of coffee or a hot lunch in our amazing retro café on board the MS Finnmarken, and a souvenir from our gorgeous shop.
“The museum is located at Hurtigruta’s birthplace Stokmarknes, in the still undiscovered, wild and beautiful Vesterålen. A visit to the museum is a great day trip experience from Svolvær. The trip takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes each way and includes the ferry between Fiskebøl-Melbu-Fiskebøl. You will find the ferry schedule at http://www.visitlofoten.com. After visiting the museum, where you should consider a minimum of 2 hours, we recommend driving “Yttersida” the spectacular “outer side” of the Hadsel island when you return, and perhaps pay a visit to Gallery Uver as well.
