About

At Gallery Lofoten in Henningsvær, you can experience everything from sculptures signed by Nico Widerberg to one of Norway’s largest collections of North Norwegian paintings from the 19th century.

Gallery Lofoten is centrally located in Henningsvær and consists of two floors with art ranging from the 19th century to the present day. The ground floor is dedicated to a large collection of paintings by artists such as Otto Sinding, Gunnar Berg, Even Ulving, and Adelsteen Normann. These painters are often referred to as the “Lofoten artists” and are credited with drawing attention to the beautiful nature of the archipelago during that time. The exhibition showcases a wide range of the artists’ North Norwegian motifs using various techniques.

In the gallery’s second floor, you will find oil paintings, sculptures, and graphics by the Widerberg family: Frans, Nico, and Thomas Widerberg. Some parts of this exhibition are for sale.

The Swedish artist Lars Lerin lived in Lofoten for twelve years and is considered one of Europe’s foremost watercolor painters. He has a small section of watercolors on the second floor, most of which depict scenes from Lofoten.

Gallery Lofoten was previously known as “Galleri Lofotens hus” but changed its name when it got new owners in 2019. In addition to art, the gallery also houses a historical exhibition about Henningsvær in earlier times. Here, you can see tools and equipment used during the Lofoten fisheries. The goal of Gallery Lofoten is to convey the history of Northern Norway and the landscape of Lofoten through art, and to be a vibrant gallery for the whole family.
