Gunnar Berg was born in 1863 and grew up on Svinøya in Svolvær, where his father was a fishing village owner and merchant. In 1882, he began studying business in Bergen, but quickly left those studies to pursue art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, Germany. He lived a busy artist’s life, splitting his time between Germany and Lofoten.
Gunnar Berg was one of the first artists to depict the nature of Lofoten. His inspiration came primarily from his hometown of Svolvær. He held a special position in his time, as one of the few artists born and raised in Lofoten with a formal education from an art academy. This local connection can be seen in how he, more than many of his contemporaries, focused on portraying daily life and people — not just majestic landscapes. He painted fishermen at work, bustling harbor scenes, fishermen’s cabins (rorbuer), boats, and trade ships.
A visit to the Gunnar Berg Gallery is therefore a meeting point between Lofoten’s history and art history. The gallery features more than 70 of the artist’s works.
Museum Nord is responsible for running the gallery and providing information during the summer season. The collection belongs to the Gunnar Berg Paintings Foundation.
