Wild Food Harvest Walk

About

Discover some of the treasures that nature has to offer during a pleasant walk with a local guide in Lofoten. Learn how to recognize different species of flora and how you can make use of them in your daily life.

During the bright summer in the Arctic, the northern nature is full of life. We invite you to join a walk through historical landscapes where you will gain a whole new perspective on what grows around us. You’ll also get to discover some of the traditional fishing grounds and typical dry fish racks of Lofoten.

We meet up at the pretty little island of Svinøya right outside Svolvær town, in the beautiful green area called ‘Kuba.’ Svinøya is connected to Svolvær by a long bridge, and you can choose to come by car or to start your walk a little earlier and go on foot. Your local guide will greet you and provide all participants with their own thermos that we will use for brewing herbal tea during the walk to taste the nice flavors of the Arctic. You also get some educational material plus a pen and paper to make notes on the plants that we learn about. The tour starts with an introduction to safety and what to think of when you harvest from the wild. We then set off and enjoy the beautiful areas of Svinøya as we go. Along the way, your guide shows several plants growing in the wild, and you get to smell and taste them while you learn about ways that you could use them. Take the opportunity to learn some history about the region and maybe even some local legends.

After the tea break, we keep moving towards the seafront where we shift focus from land-based plants to what grows under the surface. A lot of the seaweeds that are found along the coast are edible and filled with great vitamins and nutrients. Learn how to recognize and use them, and explore the traditional fishing villages with red wooden houses, boats and typical Norwegian dry fish racks.

All together, this is a tasteful, fun and educational sightseeing tour that will serve as a perfect introduction to the world of wild food!
