About

The hike starts at Lydersen rorbuer in Fredvang and takes you to the remote and breathtaking Kvalvika beach, where the turquoise waves crash on the sand and steep rock faces rise into the clouds.

On this tour, we want to take you to one of the most stunning places in the Lofoten islands. Located in an isolated bay on the northern side of Moskenesøy island and only reachable by foot, the remote Kvalvika beach feels like it could be at the edge of the world. Here, turquoise waves crash on the sand, and steep rock faces rise into the clouds. The most iconic of them is Ryten, at a height of 550 meters.

The hike starts at Lydersen rorbuer, located in the small fishing and farming village of Fredvang. This village used to be very isolated since it was, until recently, reachable only by boat or a small shuttle ferry. Nowadays, it is connected to the neighbouring islands with the two spectacular Fredvang Bridges, arching gracefully from islet to islet. The village has a thriving small fishing harbour that buzzes with life as the fishing boats come in, heavy with the catch.

Being one of Lofoten’s most famous hikes, walking to Kvalvika Beach is a visual joy. The beginning of the trail goes through the birch forest and can be muddy in certain areas, but as we approach the pass between mountains, the path will get noticeably rockier. Once you start hiking down towards the beach, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible view of Kvalvika’s turquoise waters and white sandy beach.

At the beach, there is plenty of time for strolling along the sandy coastline, taking pictures, or simply breathing in and absorbing the stunning surroundings. You can even take a little swim and wash the salt away with the mountain water that comes down to the beach. Then, we gather for a light picnic with warm drinks before heading back to Fredvang.

This moderate hike is also suitable for families with kids who enjoy hiking in the mountains.
